Users of older mobile phones will no longer be able to access WhatsApp from May 5, 2025, as the messaging platform phases out support for select devices.

This move is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to maintain security and ensure optimal performance across newer hardware and operating systems.

The decision will affect both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, as both applications share the same system requirements.

According to Meta, the change is necessary to allow the app to continue operating efficiently and securely on the latest devices.
According to the tech company, the development is due to changes in its compatibility with outdated operating systems, which means certain old smartphones won't be able to keep up with the app’s latest features and security standards.

It further explained that the changes were necessary to enhance the green app's security and functionality while ensuring compatibility with newer phones.

“The changes are part of regular updates to ensure the app stays secure and functional while working with newer phones,” Meta said in a statement.

While some iPhone users with older iOS versions can simply update their devices, others, which are still in use, can only be upgraded to iOS 12.5.7.

The phones affected in this category, which can still use WhatsApp now but will no longer be able to from 5 May, include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

These changes will impact both the standard WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business, both of which share the same system requirements.
