5 When Yeshua looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward HIM, HE said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?”
The word for test in the Greek is πειράζω peirazō = to try whether a thing can be done; here it is not a negative, it was for the purpose of asc ertaining what Phillip thought, where was Phillips faith. So, Yeshua was not tempting Phillip to sin. Although Phillip did fail to see the opportunity rather than focus on the obstacle. To see Phillips’s quality, or what he thinks, how he will behave himself when faced with this obstacle;
7 Philip answered HIM, “It would take more than half a year’s wages (Greek manuscripts say 200 denarii) to buy enough bread for each one to have even a little!”8 Another of HIS disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
Phillip (filippos = friendly horse) sees everything still through the natural lens first. Even though he has witnessed all these things that Yeshua had done up to that point. All the Apostles at this moment seemed to be thinking along the lines of Phillip and Andrew: This situation is impossible. One can’t help think back to Mary, when the natural realm looked hopeless at that wedding with the wine being gone, she simply said: Do what HE tells you to do.
Blessed art thou, O LORD our GOD, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.Baruch atah, Adonai (blessed are YOU LORD) Eloheinu melech haolam, (sovereign GOD KING of everything)hamotzee lechem min haaretz. (Who brings forth the bread of the earth).
Notice Yeshua doesn’t directly bless the food; HE thanks the Father for the food. So, in a way HE does bless the food…12 When they had all had enough to eat, HE said to HIS disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”
Despite the size of the crowd, Yeshua proceeds in an orderly fashion, seating the people in preparation for the meal.MAR 6:39-40 tells us that they ‘sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties, another reference to the Jubilee.
Yeshua knew well that the king that the crowd wanted HIM to be would only divert them away from the things that really mattered, what they really needed: Their spiritual freedom. Much like many believers, we sometimes want and desire the wrong things.
