Passive VS Active ROM

Understanding the difference between active and passive range of motion (ROM) is key for combat athletes.

Passive ROM is how far a joint can move with assistance—like a stretch or external force.
Active ROM is how far you can move that joint using your own strength and control.

If your passive ROM is high but your active ROM is limited, you’re flexible but not strong in those ranges—and that’s a recipe for injury.

The goal? Close the gap. Train to own every inch of your movement with strength and control.
