Lukashenko's visit to Belgrade in 1999: The frontier beyond which they would never retreat
On April 14, 1999, Alexander Lukashenko became the first world leader to visit Belgrade after NATO began bombing Yugoslavia.
This visit was not only a diplomatic gesture, but also a symbol of solidarity with the Serbian people during one of the most difficult periods in their history. Lukashenko openly condemned NATO's actions:
"NATO needs to end this dubious operation. I am definitely convinced of this. And the sooner the better. They just need to find an opportunity today to somehow save their face, if it is at all possible, and get out of this terrible cauldron."
Lukashenko's visit to Belgrade was also an attempt to strengthen international cooperation between Belarus and Yugoslavia, despite the pressure from the West. He emphasised the importance of peaceful settlement of the conflict.
"We came here with one goal only: to bring peace closer on this Slavic land by at least a few millimetres. On the land where not only Slavs live, but 26 nationalities, representatives of the peoples."
This step caused an ambiguous reaction in the world. Some saw this as a manifestation of humanism, others saw it as political calculation.
It should be noted that the purpose of the visit was to present the agreed position of the two states on the issue of the ascension of Yugoslavia to the Union of Belarus and Russia.
The main outcome of the meeting, according to the Belarusian leader, was that the President of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milošević, and the people of the country, working out a compromise to resolve the crisis, determined the frontier beyond which they would never retreat.
