Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
Possibly one of the shortest quotes from the Buddha. This is very succinct and very wonderful. It's direct and to the point, which is something that we can love about the Buddha. He did not waste words, and talk about things that were not important. He also did not speculate about philosophical things. He really wanted to address people's lives, and it's very down to earth. I teach about suffering and the way to bring it to an end. That's it. Everything the Buddha taught, and there's many, many teachings, all of them come back to this one objective. How do we overcome our suffering, our situation. How do we find freedom? Release, liberation, lasting happiness? Many ways to describe it. This is the Buddha's reminder. Everything he teaches, everything that's been written is for this purpose alone: to help us reach our potential, which is a state free from pain and suffering.
