Moon landing tapes got erased, NASA admits
By Reuters
July 17, 2009
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The original recordings of the first humans landing on the moon 40 years ago were erased and re-used, but newly restored copies of the original broadcast look even better, NASA officials said on Thursday.
NASA released the first glimpses of a complete digital make-over of the original landing footage that clarifies the blurry and grainy images of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the surface of the moon.

Fake Dutch 'moon rock' revealed
A treasured piece at the Dutch national museum - a supposed moon rock from the first manned lunar landing - is nothing more than petrified wood, curators say.

It was given to former Prime Minister Willem Drees during a goodwill tour by the three Apollo-11 astronauts shortly after their moon mission in 1969.

When Mr Drees died, the rock went on display at the Amsterdam museum.

At one point it was insured for around $500,000 (£308,000), but tests have proved it was not the genuine article.

The Van Allen radiation belts are two doughnut-shaped zones of highly energetic charged particles that are trapped in Earth's magnetic field. These particles, primarily protons and electrons, originate from the solar wind and are held around the planet by its magnetosphere. The belts were discovered in 1958 by physicist James A. Van Allen using data from the U.S. Explorer satellite. They play a significant role in protecting the Earth from cosmic radiation and are crucial for understanding space weather.

Democracy Incorporated: Managed Democracy and the Specter of Inverted Totalitarianism - Sheldon S. Wolin
Introduction by Chris Hedges
Wolin portrays a country where citizens are politically uninterested and submissive — and where elites are eager to keep them that way. At best the nation has
become a “managed democracy” where the public is shepherded, not sovereign. At worst it is a place where corporate power no longer answers to state controls.
Wolin makes clear that today’s America is in no way morally or politically comparable to totalitarian states like Nazi Germany, yet he warns that unchecked
economic power risks verging on total power and has its own unnerving pathologies. Wolin examines the myths and mythmaking that justify today’s politics,
the quest for an ever-expanding economy, and the perverse attractions of an endless war on terror. He argues passionately that democracy’s best hope lies in
citizens themselves learning anew to exercise power at the local level.

Democracy Incorporated is one of the most worrying diagnoses of America’s political ills to emerge in decades. It is sure to be a lightning rod for political
debate for years to come. Now with a new introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Chris Hedges, Democracy Incorporated remains an essential work for
understanding the state of democracy in America.

Inverted totalitarianism is a term used by political philosopher Sheldon Wolin to describe what he believes…
I'm not sure that "totalitarianism" is the best word here. But Mr. Wolin makes an excellent point in saying
that the U.S. government operates to serve big corporations.

Can the nation check its descent into what the author terms “inverted totalitarianism”? Wolin portrays a country
where citizens are politically uninterested and submissive — and where elites are eager to keep them that way.
At best the nation has become a “managed democracy” where the public is shepherded, not sovereign.

Although the concept of totalitarianism is central to what follows, my thesis is not that the current American political system is an
inspired replica of Nazi Germany’s or George W. Bush of Hitler. References to Hitler’s Germany
are introduced to remind the reader of the benchmarks in a system of power that was
invasive abroad, justified preemptive war as a matter of official doctrine, and repressed all
opposition at home—a system that was cruel and racist in principle and practice, deeply
ideological, and openly bent on world domina-tion. Those benchmarks are introduced to
illuminate tendencies in our own system of power that are opposed to the fundamental
principles of constitutional democracy. Those tendencies are, I believe, “totalizing” in the sense
that they are obsessed with control, expansion, superiority, and supremacy.

Corporate totalitarianism represents a new ideological development in the history of humanity. Its proponents are the oligarch class who own investment
funds and corporations, dynastic families and individuals of extraordinary wealth. They belong to the same class from which powerful politicians and
statesmen are drawn, and they help coordinate their activities at the helm of political parties, from within Government departments and across the
multitude of non-governmental bodies that are involved in the policymaking process. Global in nature and outlook, their identification is not with
any country, religion or culture, and among their chief goals is the continued accumulation of wealth and power.
