I Found Vintage Gold at Estate Sales for Thrift Store Prices!

They say you can’t go home again—but we prove them wrong, scoring amazing antique and vintage deals at thrift-store prices! We’re in Bremerton, Washington, starting our shopping adventure at a house right behind my old grade school, and remembering why this is such a great place to find vintage bargains.

Pictures of Tonka toys and die-cast cars from my childhood drew me here, but the real treasures are in the pretty glassware, pottery novelties, and all those little things from the junk drawer that were overlooked by other shoppers! A wall of $3 baseball caps offers a Hall of Fame player’s signature, while a bent-up old ring hides a 10-karat gold mark that no one else seemed to notice. Our one toy find is a 1980s Cox helicopter from the Airwolf TV show—but it’s the Viking Glass bowl, uranium glass Akro Agate cornucopia, Blue Sky Pottery house, and a stunning 1950s camera outfit that make this outing a fun and profitable adventure. We spend $80 and score over $300 in retail-value vintage finds before heading to another sale across town.

Overlooking the Olympic Mountains and Kitsap Lake, our second stop features unusual pieces rarely seen at typical estate sales—including a Japanese silk Disney jumpsuit from the 1950s, an early Air Force uniform, and a beautiful 1908 silk plaque with a sailor and his vessel from the Great White Fleet era. Early doll dressers, elegant mirrors, and small 1910s–1920s furniture tempt us, but the real steals are a Glass Eye Studio vase, a marble mortar and pestle, and quirky 1960s pamphlets priced to go.

Then it’s off to Port Orchard, the neighboring town, where a poorly promoted, family-run estate sale offers hidden potential! Prices are all over the place—some ridiculously high ($200 for a Breyer horse?!) and some thrift-shop low, like the four pieces of Native American pottery we grab for just $15.50 that are valued at nearly $100.

Our homecoming feels complete as we cross Galloping Gertie, the bridge with a mind of its own, and head back to prep our finds for our wonderful collectors!
