Russia–Ukraine Conflict & Diplomacy
Peace Talks with the U.S. Remain Elusive
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that reaching a peace agreement with the United States to end the war in Ukraine remains difficult, emphasizing ongoing discussions over critical components. While U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to be remembered as a peacemaker and end the three-year conflict, no deal has yet been finalized. Lavrov underscored the importance of a "mutually beneficial deal," warning against agreements that could entrap Russia. He reiterated Russia's demands, including Ukraine abandoning its NATO ambitions and withdrawing from territories Russia claims. Russia presently controls about 20% of Ukraine, including Crimea and parts of four other regions, though these claims lack broad international recognition. Lavrov credited Trump’s understanding of NATO’s role in sparking the war, while rejecting any possibility of renewed economic dependence on the West. He criticized the broader effects of Western sanctions on global economic integration and reaffirmed Russia’s position that the war represents a response to Western encroachment following NATO’s expansion. The Kremlin cautioned that it remains premature to expect major improvements in U.S.-Russia relations.
