2 Best Animals For Homesteads (2025)

In this video we discuss the pro's and con's of the animals on our homestead/farm PLUS some other common farm animals.

And then we announce our top two choices and why...

Here are the animals we discuss, their pros, and cons (with their timestamp):

-Alpacas/llamas (1:10)
-Pros
-High quality fiber
-low danger
-easy to feed and water
-Predator resistant (especially llamas)
-Cons
-They can kick and spit
-They can get sick (white tail deer can make them sick)

-Cattle (7:54)
-Pros
-Lots of meat and milk
-Cold hardy
-Cons
-They eat A LOT
-They are dangerous (especially bulls)

-Sheep (12:37)
-Pros
-Don't break fences as much as goats
-Don't eat a lot
-Great wool/fiber
-Don't eat a lot
-Cons
-Sometimes they break out

-Chickens/Ducks (14:25)
-Pros
-Eggs are nutritious
-Easy to feed no matter the situation
-They require very little space
-Cons
-They can get eaten by predators even if you have a rooster

Some additional pros, cons, and considerations:
-Llamas are bigger than alpacas so they can carry more weight as pack animals
-Ducks can make water very dirty so that is a con for ducks
-Horses are highly useful, especially draft horses for excavating land, haying fields, moving lumber, etc.
-Cats are important for catching mice that eat food reserves and animal feed
-Dogs are great for self defense, tracking, hunting, herding, and a whole lot more
-Worm farms are great for producing great compost for gardens and feed for chickens/ducks/etc.
-Manure from ALL these animals are highly useful
