An American silent comedy film starring and co-directed by Buster Keaton, and inspired by the Great Locomotive Chase, a true story of an event that occurred during the American Civil War.

According to a United Artists press release at the time, the film had 3,000 people on its payroll and cost $400 an hour to make.

The film is known for it's costs and incredibly dangerous stunts.
The train wreck of the "Texas" shot cost $42,000, the most expensive single shot in silent-film history. The production company left the wreckage in the riverbed. The locomotive became a minor tourist attraction for nearly twenty years.

In 1989, the film was selected by the Library of Congress to be included in the first class of films for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
