EGYPTIANS WANT RAFAH CROSSING OPENED

On 8 April, Egyptians protested in the city of Arish, near Gaza, demanding the border be opened for humanitarian aid and that Palestine's right to self-determination be respected.

Since its military onslaught that began on 7 October in Gaza, Israel closed the Gaza border and seized control of the Philadelphi Corridor that separates Gaza from Egypt. Egypt also closed its border leading to Gaza.

Humanitarian aid has only trickled into Gaza over the past 18 months. Recently, Israel stopped allowing aid deliveries, a stipulation of the 19 January ceasefire, thereby breaking the agreement.

Egyptian protesters also opposed US and Israeli plans to displace Palestinians to make way for a real-estate development in Gaza, as the death toll of US-backed Israeli massacres in the Gaza Strip since October 2023 continues to rise. In July 2024, the Lancet medical journal estimated more than 186,000 deaths.
