"Suffering has a positive quality. It dispels the pride of arrogance, brings compassion for the world. Through it we shun evil, and then joy is found in virtue." -Shantideva, in the way of the Bodhisattva.

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
What a wonderful teaching by Shantideva. We typically think suffering is something bad, something to get rid of. Santideva is turning that around. He's saying, hey, there's something very positive about suffering. It does some very good, important things for us. It gets rid of our pride and our arrogance, and it allows us to connect with the suffering of others. We can experience and realize that suffering is universally common to all sentient beings, and it may help us to become motivated to get rid of evil or negative types of behavior, and as he says, joy is found in virtue. Suffering has a positive quality. It dispels the pride of arrogance, brings compassion for the world. Evil is shunned, and joy is found in virtue. What a wonderful quote.
