Ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has appeared in criminal court for his first formal hearing. He faces serious charges of orchestrating a rebellion and has been accused of serving as the "ringleader of an insurrection."
Yoon arrived at the Seoul courthouse in a convoy, greeted by a crowd of cheering supporters gathered outside. He was impeached last December after declaring martial law and allegedly ordering South Korean troops to storm the National Assembly.
Under South Korean law, the crime of insurrection carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment or even death. Yoon has denied all allegations, defending his declaration of martial law as a legitimate act of governance.
