Altitude and Azimuth, Navigating the Night Sky
Welcome to Introductory Astronomy Lectures
I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to my introductory lectures on astronomy. It is with great enthusiasm that I embark on this scholarly journey into the captivating field of amateur astronomy. To commence your exploration, all that is required is a location devoid of light pollution and a commitment of time. Observational astronomy invites individuals to escape the confines of urban illumination in order to appreciate the vast expanse of the nocturnal sky, where one might observe celestial entities such as stars, the Moon, or even a comet.
Observational Experience
Allow me to recount a personal experience from Boulder, Colorado, where I had the privilege of capturing the awe-inspiring beauty of the Milky Way. For those new to the field, identifying the distinctive teapot formation of the constellation Sagittarius, along with other constellations, serves as an exhilarating entry point. Celestial objects, including stars and planets, possess specific coordinates in the sky, delineated by the horizontal coordinate system. This system is predicated on two primary measurements: altitude, which denotes the height above the horizon, and azimuth, which signifies the angle along the horizon.
Utilizing software such as Stellarium can greatly enhance one’s ability to visualize these coordinates from various terrestrial locations. It is important to note that this coordinate system varies depending on the observer’s location and temporal context, rendering it more suitable for local observations rather than distant communications.
Preparing for Exploration
A comprehensive understanding of the horizontal coordinate system equips individuals to explore the night sky and locate celestial objects relative to their own positions. Engaging with constellations is a fundamental step toward effectively communicating the locations of stars.
This presentation is merely the beginning of a series developed initially for William Paterson University and CUNY Hunter, designed to support online courses and materials for introductory astronomy. By engaging with all videos within this series, participants will successfully complete a full undergraduate course in astronomy. I encourage you to enjoy this enlightening journey through the cosmos.
