“Legion” – Mark 5:9 / Luke 8:30
Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

This is one of the most well-known self-descriptions.

The spirit (or spirits) speaks in the first person singular, but refers to many ("we are many"), showing that a single person can be influenced by multiple spirits.

“Legion” is a Roman military term (~6,000 soldiers), suggesting force, organization, and oppression.

They Know Jesus’ Identity – Mark 1:24
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

The unclean spirit recognizes Jesus and calls Him the “Holy One of God.”

This shows that they have supernatural knowledge, even before humans fully recognize Jesus’ identity.
Often, unclean spirits speak in a way that suggests they are representing a group, like a ringleader or voice for the collective. Even though they’re spiritual beings, they show personalities, intentions, and even resistance.
Summary of How They Describe Themselves:
Plural and powerful (“Legion”)

Knowing but afraid of Jesus

Destructive and oppressive

Acknowledging authority but resistant

Rarely naming themselves individually
