At the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on April 12, 2025, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for a shift toward a multipolar world order. He criticized NATO’s expansion, which he claimed betrayed promises made after the Cold War. Lavrov argued that NATO should have been dissolved alongside the Warsaw Pact and suggested that a new security framework in Eurasia, driven by regional powers, was necessary.

Turning to relations with the United States, Lavrov expressed hope that the new U.S. administration under Donald Trump would help end Russia’s “isolation” from the West. On the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Lavrov framed the situation as one of cultural and linguistic rights, accusing Western powers of exacerbating the crisis by supporting policies that suppress Russian speakers. He said that Russia was no more chasing territories but “protecting people”.

Lavrov’s statements at the forum underscored Russia’s continued opposition to NATO while pushing for a restructured international system that better represents regional powers.
