In a dramatic shift, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly agreed to re-engage in nuclear talks with the United States following rare internal pressure from the country’s top leadership. According to *The New York Times*, senior Iranian officials warned Khamenei that without negotiations, Iran risked facing direct US or Israeli military strikes on key nuclear facilities like Natanz and Fordow. The officials said the combination of external attack, economic collapse, and potential domestic unrest could threaten the very survival of the Islamic Republic. Though historically opposed to US engagement, Khamenei has now agreed to consider limits on uranium enrichment and allow stricter inspections—while refusing to discuss Iran’s ballistic missile programme, calling it a red line. Talks have tentatively resumed in Muscat, Oman, marking the first high-level contact between Tehran and Washington since 2018. Both sides described the indirect discussions as “constructive,” with another round of talks expected next week.
