Neutron Binary

One of the most well-known events, GW170817, was detected on August 17, 2017, via gravitational waves by LIGO and Virgo detectors.

It was accompanied by electromagnetic signals, including gamma-ray bursts and kilonova light, marking the first time such a merger was observed across multiple wavelengths.

The collision released elements like gold, platinum, and uranium, confirmed that neutron star mergers are a key source of heavy elements in the universe, and helped refine estimates of the Hubble constant.
