Redeemed from the Storm | A Deep Blues Song Inspired by Psalm 107
📜 Psalm 107 was written after the Israelites returned from exile — most likely after the Babylonian captivity (around the 6th century BC). It’s a song of thanksgiving, written to celebrate God's mercy and deliverance. The psalmist (unknown, but possibly from the priestly or Levitical lines) calls on people to remember how God rescued them from their troubles: from wandering in deserts, imprisonment, sickness, and storms at sea.
It reminds us that no matter how deep the pit, when people cry out to God, He hears and He saves. Psalm 107 is a heartfelt testimony that God's love endures forever.
Psalm 107 (WEB):
Give thanks to Yahweh,[a] for he is good,
for his loving kindness endures forever.
2
Let the redeemed by Yahweh say so,
whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
3
and gathered out of the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4
They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way.
They found no city to live in.
5
Hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted in them.
6
Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7
He led them also by a straight way,
that they might go to a city to live in.
8
Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
9
For he satisfies the longing soul.
He fills the hungry soul with good.
10
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
being bound in affliction and iron,
11
because they rebelled against the words of God,[b]
and condemned the counsel of the Most High.
12
Therefore he brought down their heart with labor.
They fell down, and there was no one to help.
13
Then they cried to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he saved them out of their distresses.
14
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
and broke away their chains.
15
Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
16
For he has broken the gates of bronze,
and cut through bars of iron.
17
Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience,
and because of their iniquities.
18
Their soul abhors all kinds of food.
They draw near to the gates of death.
19
Then they cry to Yahweh in their trouble,
and he saves them out of their distresses.
20
He sends his word, and heals them,
and delivers them from their graves.
21
Let them praise Yahweh for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
22
Let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and declare his deeds with singing.
23
Those who go down to the sea in ships,
who do business in great waters,

🎵 Lyrics: Redeemed from the Storm
[Slow, raw delta blues]
Verse 1
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good,
His mercy endures, like a river it stood.
(The redeemed say so)
(The redeemed say so)
Gathered from the east, west, north, and south,
He broke our chains, put a new song in our mouth.
(Oh, He broke our chains)
Verse 2
They wandered in deserts, hungry and dry,
Their souls fainted, they started to cry.
(They cried to the Lord)
(He delivered them all)
He led them by a straight way home,
To a city where their hearts could roam.
Chorus
[Soft groove]
Oh give thanks to the Lord for His love,
(For His wonderful works)
(For His wonderful works)
He fills the hungry soul with good,
He lifts the broken, like only He could.
Verse 3
Some sat in darkness, in deepest gloom,
Bound in affliction, trapped in their tombs.
(They cried to the Lord)
(He broke their chains)
He sent His word and healed their pain.
Bridge
[Pick up the beat slightly]
Storms rose high, the seas grew wild,
Their courage melted, they cried like a child.
(Then they cried to the Lord)
(He stilled the storm)
He guided them safe to the heavenly shore.
Final Chorus
[Slow down]
Oh give thanks to the Lord for His love,
(For His wonderful works)
(For His wonderful works)
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
(Oh, let them say so)
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.
[End softly]
