It was the most sensational trial of the 1980s: Young, debonair Robert Chambers on trial for killing 19-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park, NY. Her body was found half-naked, beaten and strangled. Because of his upscale background, they dubbed him "The Preppy Killer."

During court hearings, one up-and-coming bishop made the unusual choice of taking the stand in defense of Chambers. That bishop was Theodore McCarrick, a longtime and popular fixture in New York, who surrounded himself with boys he called his "nephews" from local Catholic families.
