On April 10, 2025, a Bell 206 sightseeing helicopter operated by New York Helicopters crashed into the Hudson River near Jersey City, killing all six aboard, including a Spanish family of five and the pilot. The chopper, which took off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m., followed a tourist route past the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson to the George Washington Bridge before turning south. At 3:17 p.m., witnesses reported the helicopter breaking apart midair—losing its rotor blade and tail—before plunging upside down into the 50-degree water off Hoboken’s Pier A Park.

The victims included Siemens executive Agustín Escobar, his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children, ages 4, 5, and 11, alongside the 36-year-old pilot. Emergency responders, including NYPD, FDNY, and Jersey City teams, recovered four bodies at the scene; two others died at Jersey City Medical Center. Videos captured the horrifying descent, showing debris scattering as the chopper hit the water. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA are investigating, with early reports suggesting a catastrophic mechanical failure or rotor issue.

This video covers the flight path, witness accounts, and the ongoing investigation into one of NYC’s deadliest helicopter crashes since 2018. We also reflect on the community’s response, from Mayor Eric Adams’ condolences to President Trump’s statement calling the footage “horrendous.” Join us as we explore what went wrong.
