In the Beginning

The story begins in 1992, with Carl "CJ" Johnson returning to Los Santos after spending five years on the East Coast. He arrives at Los Santos International Airport, only to receive devastating news from his brother Sweet—their mother has been killed.

As CJ leaves the airport, he is quickly intercepted by corrupt LSPD officers, led by Officer Tenpenny, along with Pulaski and Hernandez. They rob him of his money, accuse him of murdering a fellow officer, and dump him in Ballas territory, putting his life in immediate danger. Left stranded with nothing but a bicycle, CJ makes his way back home to Grove Street.
Upon arriving, CJ reflects on how much his old neighborhood has changed, muttering the now-iconic line: "Ah shit, here we go again."

Big Smoke

Returning to his childhood home, CJ finds it abandoned and in disrepair. As he picks up a framed photo of his mother, memories of his past flood his mind. Suddenly, Big Smoke, an old friend from the Grove Street Families, mistakes him for an intruder and nearly attacks him with a baseball bat.

After realizing it’s CJ, Smoke greets him warmly, expressing sorrow over his mother’s death. He offers CJ a ride to the cemetery, where the rest of the family is gathered.

Sweet & Kendl

At Vinewood Cemetery, CJ reunites with his siblings—Sweet and Kendl—along with their childhood friend, Ryder. Emotions run high as Sweet confronts CJ for being absent during their mother’s final years, even bringing up their late brother Brian. Tensions rise further when Sweet disapproves of Kendl’s relationship with Cesar Vialpando, a member of the Varrios Los Aztecas.
The moment is interrupted by a Ballas drive-by attack. The group is forced to flee as the Ballas destroy Smoke’s car. With no other option, they grab nearby BMX bikes and make a desperate escape back to Grove Street, all while being chased by their gang rivals.

Along the way, Sweet explains how Grove Street Families has lost much of its power, with internal divisions weakening the gang. Despite being out of shape, CJ manages to keep up and eventually reaches home safely.
After the chaotic ride, CJ is greeted with hostility by Sweet, who still resents him for leaving. Meanwhile, Ryder mocks CJ for his outdated appearance, urging him to get some gang colors and a haircut. As the group disperses, CJ is left standing in front of his childhood home, determined to make things right.

🔹 This mission marks the beginning of CJ’s journey to rebuild the Grove Street Families and uncover the truth behind his mother’s murder.
