'The Slings and Arrows of Outrageous Fortune' - savage, rumbling, dynamic, super-powered, energetic, lyrical rock from UK underground musical pioneer JAYL - featuring a myriad of fantastic multi-layered guitars by the maestro Andy Wood (aka A.C Wood). These are brand new mixes from 2024 - new versions constructed and mastered at Martello 3A Studio – Folkestone - from unused guitar and vocal tracks from “The Slings” - opening track from Jayl's seminal masterpiece - THE DANCE OF LIFE – always growing and evolving like an ‘oak tree’ or like the ‘Cloud Atlas’. Composed and Performed by Jayl and Andy Wood and originally recorded and produced at Jayl's Underground Studio - Gloucester, UK.
Jayl used his Purism methodology to construct this most original work; including gamezzz called 'Two Songs in One', 'Book & Transport' and 'Six Reasons'. From these gamezzz came the lyrics, the drums and the loops. Like "Hamlet", the story is a tale of irony and tragedy, focusing on a vengeful ghost. The complexity of Shakespeare's classic is reflected in the lyrics of this song. Jayl describes "The Slings" ghost as the 'Phantom of Irony and Shame'. As well as the mythical spectral themes, the lyrics allude to artists and musicians surviving 'the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’, which has so often been the case in Jayl's own career; where nothing has come easy and he's had to fight as a warrior on every step of his journey. And now with the 'slings and arrows of outrageous fortune' having brought war, plague and pestilence to the world in recent times, the words emerge even more sharply in to focus.
In truth, the lyrics to this song have multi-layered meanings, just as the song has multi-layers of musical content. BBC Radio Bristol described THE SLINGS as "straddling the genres." Jayl endeavours to blend and fuse Dubstep sounds with layered rock guitars, basses (inc: Sub) and layered vocals, delivered with a ferocious and powerful singing style.
