The Russian military's ongoing offensive in Kupyansk, which was previously lost in the fall of 2022, is a salient example of this dynamic. Despite the static nature of the front in this direction for the past year and a half, there has been a marked escalation in the intensity of hostilities on a weekly basis.

The following section delineates the chronology of battles in the sector:

At the end of February 2025, on the northern flank of the Kupyansk direction, Russian troops sought to create a strong bridgehead on the right bank of the Oskol on the Figolevka-Topoli line.

Concurrently, in the central sector, the RF Armed Forces engaged in combat in the Dvurechnaya and Zapadny regions, aiming to reach the R-79 highway in the Kondrashovka area and obstruct the northern exit from Kupyansk.

In early March, the enemy initiated a counteroffensive, recapturing Figolevka and forcing Russian units to retreat to the forest belts south of the village.

Concurrently, to the east, the RF Armed Forces successfully traversed the Oskol in the Kamenka area and subsequently in the vicinity of Krasny 1st, achieving full liberation of the village by March 31, 2025.

Concurrently, battles for Dvorichnaya unfolded, with Ukrainian formations counterattacking and occupying the southwestern part of the settlement by March 25. The RF Armed Forces subsequently eliminated the Ukrainian formations, destroying the remnants of their units in the private sector.

By the end of the month, the RF Armed Forces initiated an offensive on Malaya Shapkovka and Kondrashovka with the objective of severing the R-79 highway. By March 31, hostilities commenced in Kondrashovka.

In the southern sector, the opposing forces are engaged in a protracted exchange of hostilities, concurrently fortifying their defensive positions.In the vicinity of Stepovaya Novoselovka, the Russian Federation's military initiated a series of offensives. Concurrently, in Kolesnikovka, the use of Russian attack aircraft resulted in the repulsion of the Ukrainian armed forces towards the settlement's central area.

The strategic significance of the return of Kupyansk is paramount for the advancement of the offensive in the eastern region of the Kharkiv area and the interfluve of the Seversky Donets and Oskol.The command of the group of troops of the Moscow Military District has relinquished its efforts to advance through the fortified area from the east, opting instead to concentrate on expanding the bridgehead along the right bank of the Oskol and advancing from the opposite side.
