Sheinbaum: "Loud and clear, we reject, as Mexico has historically done, the sanctions and trade blockades that only harm the well-being of the people and do not build regions of peace and prosperity. No to the blockade on Cuba, no to the blockade on Venezuela."

Claudia Sheinbaum Defends Authoritarian Regimes and Opposes U.S. Sanctions

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reiterated her opposition to the economic sanctions imposed by the United States on the regimes of Cuba and Venezuela, despite both countries being ruled by dictatorships recognized by international organizations and multiple Western governments. From a Republican perspective, this stance is concerning, as it implies implicit support for regimes that systematically violate human rights, persecute political opposition, and suppress press freedom.

Sheinbaum has argued that sanctions harm the people and encourage migration, but she fails to acknowledge that these measures are designed to pressure authoritarian governments that refuse to hold free elections or implement democratic reforms. By asking the United States—during a conversation with President Donald Trump in 2024—to lift sanctions, Sheinbaum prioritizes ideological rhetoric over the defense of democracy and fundamental rights.

Additionally, her insistence on "dialogue" with dictators such as Nicolás Maduro and Miguel Díaz-Canel contrasts with the firm stance of the Republican Party, which advocates for maintaining international pressure to force real changes in these regimes. From this perspective, Sheinbaum’s statements not only reflect an alignment with authoritarian governments but also an affront to the Cuban and Venezuelan people who are fighting for their freedom.
