I Found Unexpected Danger While Shopping for Antiques & Vintage!

This one’s a wild ride! For years, Old Town Antique Mall in Grants Pass, Oregon has been the perfect midpoint shopping destination on my trips to California, but we haven’t been in years. Today, we get to see how this beloved antique mall has evolved with the collector’s market, and take you along for fun, vintage bargains…and unexpected danger!

There’s wonderment and peril in this spacious antique venue, where even the coffee and peanut service is vintage. Wonderment comes when we look in the showcases, where antiques we’ve never seen dwell among bargain priced vintage. We spot a stunning Rustin Pottery metallic glaze jug, a wall of Mata Ortiz pots, an early R. Lalique signed opalescent vase, and a Czech communist party globe—definitely first-of-their-kind finds for us! Meanwhile, we get Russel Wright American Modern, Roseanne Sparkler owls that will accent our costume jewelry and a Treasure Craft teepee and drum shaker set from their 1940s factory at prices that rival thrift stores. A perfect start to our shopping spree!

Peril awaits us in the back room. We first come across the famed R. Crumb ‘Keep on Truckin’ poster that led to years of lawsuits, encounter witches and black cats—and then IT appears! We jump back when we see a Revigorator water cooler on a high shelf, a neat looking but truly unsafe 1920s notion that pledged “healthfulness” by irradiating your water with a radioactive glaze! We alert the alarmed store staff, and carry on with our shopping a safe distance away.

After that scare, we get back to the fun, and there’s plenty to discover! A beautifully styled lace-dipped Victorian Doulton syrup, cool 1940s travel cases with labels, vintage clothes, banks, MCM glass…this mall really has the selection, and we remember why this is our antique destination on this drive down I-5. Scarce WWII home front items like a Statue of Liberty clock and a bakelite 78 record holder, a really cool mechanical Bodyscope from 1910 and more bargains like a one-year-only Viking dish for $6 make this a fun shopping stop!
