"We are committed to funding at least $1.5 trillion in savings for the American people, while also preserving our essential programs. The Democrats are now trying to take advantage of the claim that we’re going to cut Medicaid and other things. That is simply not true.

We’re going to protect the essential programs for everyone who is eligible to receive them. We’re ready to move forward. I hope that the Speaker, his team, and his House colleagues can succeed today, that the budget resolution is passed. And that will set us up for the next step in this process, which will enable us to achieve all the items on President Trump’s agenda, including those I just mentioned.

But it is absolutely essential that we work very, very hard to see what we can do to make government smaller, more efficient, and more accountable to the American taxpayer."

Today, April 10, 2025, the United States House of Representatives passed the bill known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act) with a vote of 220 in favor and 208 against. This bill requires individuals to present documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, when registering to vote in federal elections.

Supporters of the SAVE Act argue that it is a necessary measure to prevent non-citizens from voting and to strengthen election integrity. However, opponents, including many Democrats and voting rights organizations, claim that it could disenfranchise millions of people—especially marginalized groups such as people of color, young people, rural voters, and tribal citizens—who may have difficulty accessing the required documents.

The bill also includes criminal penalties for election officials who register voters without the proper documentation and mandates that states purge non-citizens from voter rolls based on incomplete data. Although a previous version of the SAVE Act failed in the Senate, the future of this legislation remains uncertain, and civil rights groups are urging the Senate to block it.
