Paranoid Black Sabbath

"Paranoid" is a legendary track by Black Sabbath, released in 1970 as the lead single from their second album, also titled Paranoid. The song was written quickly—reportedly in about 20-25 minutes—when the band needed a short filler track for the album. Guitarist Tony Iommi came up with the riff, and bassist Geezer Butler penned the lyrics, which reflect his struggles with depression and the confusion between paranoia and mental health issues, influenced by experiences with drugs like marijuana. Ozzy Osbourne delivered the vocals with a raw, desperate energy, cementing the song’s place as a heavy metal classic.

The track became Black Sabbath’s first major hit, reaching number 4 on the UK Singles Chart and number 61 on the US Billboard Hot 100, despite limited radio play in the States. Its driving riff, relentless rhythm, and dark themes helped define the heavy metal genre. The album Paranoid itself, originally intended to be called War Pigs, was renamed by the record label to avoid controversy during the Vietnam War era, though the single’s success likely influenced that decision.
