β Patience & Meditation β The Shaolin Way
When you're pissed off, the first thing you need to do is deal with yourselfβnot react against the world. If you donβt slow down and center your mind, youβll not only hurt others, but youβll also damage yourself. In Shaolin Kung Fu, this is a fundamental principle: the true enemy is often within.
The Shaolin path teaches that before you strike, you must first calm your heart. The monks have practiced this for centuriesβnot only through combat training but through stillness and silence. One of the most powerful tools is focused attention. Meditation is not just sitting in silence; itβs learning to anchor your mind.
Start with something simple: your breath. Focus on your breathing, and your breathing only. This is called ZuΓ² ChΓ‘n (εη¦ )βsitting meditation. Itβs the foundation. But for Shaolin warriors, this kind of calm is trained to remain even in motion. In fact, breathing with awareness while you're moving, training, or even in a fight is a hallmark of an advanced practitioner.
The breath leads the body. When you control your breath, you control your movements. And when you control your movements, youβre free to actβnot out of emotion, but out of clarity.
So today, we focus on our actionsβand our actions only. In Shaolin Kung Fu, this is embodied in the forms (ε₯θ·―, taolu): precise, flowing sequences that demand focus, intention, and internal stillness despite the external motion. Whether someone insults you, threatens you, or provokes youβyour form must remain pure. You do not flinch. You do not lose yourself. You act from within.
This is not weakness; this is mastery. This is patience. And patience, in the Shaolin tradition, is a high form of strength. It is also a form of meditationβin action.
So letβs make the best of this wild world. Letβs learn to hold stillness in motion, and peace in pressure.
