Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
This is a common theme that runs through the Buddha's teachings, which is personal responsibility. Buddhism does not have a savior, somebody that can take our problems away from us or give us peace and bliss and heaven and anything like that. The Buddha and Buddhism itself emphasizes that we are in charge of our lives and what we do has consequences both for bad and for good. So, Buddhism really is about empowering us and then offering tools such as meditation to help us help ourselves. What a wonderful thing. Many people do want to turn over our lives to others or to some higher power or authority, but Buddhism offers a different approach. Buddhism says you are in charge of your life and your decisions matter and have consequences. This is extremely empowering and a very positive message.
