The Disbelief of the People of Isa (Jesus)(AS)

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders, Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.

We welcome you to the Islamic informative series episode No 21 on healing and events from the Holly Quran, in this video we will describe, The Disbelief of the People of Isa (AS)

The story of Isa (AS), known as Jesus in Christianity, is not only one of immense miracles and divine wisdom but also one of rejection and disbelief. Despite his miraculous birth, extraordinary signs, and clear divine mission, many among the Children of Israel rejected Isa (AS) and failed to recognize him as a prophet sent by Allah. Their disbelief and stubbornness in the face of irrefutable evidence reveal a deep-rooted resistance to change and a preference for maintaining the status quo over accepting divine guidance. In this narrative, the Qur'an presents a powerful reflection on the consequences of disbelief, human arrogance, and the rejection of Allah's truth, showing how even the most evident signs of divine intervention can be ignored or denied by those whose hearts are hardened.

Isa (AS) was sent to the Children of Israel at a time when they were divided and had deviated from the true monotheistic path of their forefathers. Their religious leaders had led them astray with their innovations, and idol worship had crept back into their practices. In such an environment, Isa (AS) was sent as a mercy from Allah, to guide them back to the worship of the One True God, Allah. His mission was to purify the faith of the people and teach them about justice, compassion, and the oneness of Allah.

As the Qur'an recounts in Surah Al-Imran (3:49), Isa (AS) performed miraculous acts to confirm his prophethood. He healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, cured the lepers, and even raised the dead—all by the permission of Allah. These miracles were not performed by Isa (AS) as a sign of his own power but as evidence of Allah’s might and grace. These acts were meant to lead the people to faith in Allah, to convince them of Isa's (AS) truthfulness as a prophet, and to call them back to the true path of monotheism.

Yet, despite these remarkable signs, many among the Children of Israel refused to accept Isa (AS) as a prophet. The resistance he faced stemmed not from a lack of evidence but from an unwillingness to accept the truth. This rejection was rooted in arrogance, pride, and the refusal to abandon their own misguided beliefs and practices.

The Qur'an speaks extensively about the rejection of Isa (AS) by many of the Israelites. It describes how, despite the clear signs and miracles he performed, many people still disbelieved and accused him of being a false prophet. They were not willing to accept that a man like Isa (AS), born to Maryam (AS), a woman of high virtue, could be the true messenger of Allah. Their refusal to accept Isa (AS) as a prophet reflects the deep-rooted pride and arrogance that prevented them from recognizing the truth. They were more concerned with their social status, the preservation of their traditions, and maintaining their power rather than accepting a new message from Allah.

In Surah Al-Ma'idah verse 110, Allah recounts the conversation between Isa (AS) and the disbelievers, in which they demanded miracles as proof of his divine mission, even though they had already witnessed many signs. The Qur'an says: **“[The Day] when Allah will say, ‘O Isa, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve and reject your message.’”** Here, Allah outlines how those who followed Isa (AS) and accepted his message would be distinguished and elevated over those who rejected him. The disbelievers, despite witnessing the miracles and hearing the divine message, were unwilling to submit to the will of Allah.

One of the primary reasons for the disbelief of many Israelites was the opposition from their religious leaders. The religious elite of the time had a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. They were afraid that if the message of Isa (AS) was accepted, it would undermine their authority and influence over the people. These leaders were also resistant to the message of equality and justice that Isa (AS) preached, as it would challenge their social and economic positions. Therefore, they led the charge against Isa (AS), accusing him of being a false prophet, a magician, or a heretic.

The Qur'an reveals how the religious leaders distorted the message of Isa (AS) and spread lies about him. In Surah Al-Imran (3:55), Allah describes the plot to discredit Isa (AS): **“[Mention] when Allah said, ‘O Isa, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve and reject your message.’”** This verse indicates that the disbelievers tried to harm Isa (AS), but Allah’s plan was far greater. Isa (AS) was protected from harm, and those who opposed him would not succeed in their plots.

The religious elite, in their arrogance, also rejected Isa’s (AS) message of humility and submission to Allah’s will. He preached love, forgiveness, and selflessness—values that went against the self-serving attitudes of the religious authorities. They did not want to give up their control over the people, and so, they encouraged the masses to reject Isa (AS) and his message.

Despite the clear signs and miracles, the Children of Israel were divided in their response to Isa (AS). While some accepted him as a prophet, many others rejected him outright. Among those who rejected him, there were various groups: some viewed him as a threat to their power, while others simply could not comprehend the miraculous nature of his birth and prophethood. Some were led astray by their own desires, while others were influenced by the religious leaders who had entrenched themselves in positions of authority and were determined to preserve their influence.

In Surah As-Saff (61:6), Allah mentions how Isa (AS) faced the challenge of division among his people: **“And [recall] when Isa, the son of Maryam, said, ‘O Children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad.’”** Despite this clear statement from Isa (AS) about his mission, some rejected his message entirely, while others accepted it with skepticism or with the condition that they would not fully embrace his teachings.

The division continued as the followers of Isa (AS) became marginalized, and those who rejected him continued to spread falsehoods about him. This division among the people ultimately led to the weakening of the true message of Isa (AS), and the clarity of his miracles and guidance was overshadowed by the disbelief and rejection of the masses.

As the opposition grew, the disbelievers among the Children of Israel conspired to kill Isa (AS). Their hearts were hardened, and they were unwilling to submit to the divine truth. In their arrogance, they believed that by eliminating Isa (AS), they could silence the message of Allah. However, Allah’s plan was far more powerful than their schemes. The Qur’an clearly states that they did not succeed in their attempts to kill Isa (AS). Allah protected Isa (AS), and instead, he was raised up to Himself, sparing him from death.

In Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158), it is revealed: **“And [the disbelievers] said, ‘Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Isa, the son of Maryam, the messenger of Allah.’ But they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself.”** This divine intervention ensured that Isa (AS) was spared from the brutality of those who sought to harm him, and his life and mission continued to have a profound impact on history.

The story of the disbelief among the people of Isa (AS) serves as a timeless lesson about the dangers of arrogance, the consequences of rejecting divine guidance, and the persistence of Allah’s will. Despite the clear signs and miracles that Isa (AS) performed, many of the Children of Israel chose to reject him, driven by pride, fear of losing their power, and an unwillingness to change. Their resistance to the truth ultimately led to their downfall, while those who followed Isa (AS) and accepted his message were rewarded and protected by Allah. This story emphasizes the importance of humility, submission to Allah, and the recognition of His signs, as well as the devastating consequences of rejecting divine guidance in favor of worldly desires.

With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to follow the injunctions of the Quran and the Prophetic Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz.
