Inmost: A Microtonal Study in Mesoklian

"Inmost" is the first of what will be many of my experimental microtonal studies. These studies are written with the aim of discovering natural microtonal musicality that can, and should become accepted music practice. I aspire to prove that microtonality can not only seamlessly integrate into common music practice, but that microtonality is in actuality, no different than tonality and enables superior expression in both magnitude & quality.

In this study I explore microtonal harmony and how it can be used to add depth and complexity to common sound profiles such as Aeolian. This allows the listener to hear and feel harmonics that are unfamiliar while still being quite comfortable in the overall familiar tonality. In order to achieve this, this piece is written in an experimental mode that I devised called Mesoklian, which means "of being bent inwards." It is built off of Aeolian but with a Super-Major 2nd and a Sub-Minor 6th. As the name implies, these intervals are bent inwards which consequentially results in a stronger tonal polarity inwards towards the Minor 3rd and Major 5th. Due to the positioning of these foreign intervals, it creates an auditory experience that frequently alternates between major-ish and minor-ish sound palates that can feel at times otherworldly. The intervals create a distorted reality of Aeolian while maintaining the essence of its Pathos through the security of the structural tones.

(I plan on making a video analysis of Mesoklian in the future, so stay tuned for that)
