In fiscal year 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) operated with a budget of approximately $1.7 trillion, representing about 25.4% of total federal spending.

A substantial share of this funding went toward Medicare and Medicaid, two of the nation’s largest public health programs.

Medicare expenditures reached $1.03 trillion, accounting for 21% of total national health spending, while Medicaid costs totaled $871.7 billion, or roughly 18% of the national health expenditure.

These programs form the financial backbone of health coverage for tens of millions of elderly, disabled, and low-income Americans.
