On this day in 1945, Soviet troops stormed the fortress city of Königsberg. The Soviet Information Bureau reported:

"After stubborn street fighting, today, April 9, troops of the 3rd Belorussian Front stormed the fortress and main city of East Prussia, Königsberg, a strategically important German defense hub on the Baltic Sea.

During the day of fighting, by 8 p.m., the front's troops had captured over 27,000 German soldiers and officers, and had also seized a large quantity of weapons and various military equipment."
