Crashes on board USS Philippine Sea (CV-47)

A selection of mishaps suffered by US Navy aircraft during combat operations on USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) in the early 1950s during the Korean War.

0:00 F4U-4B Corsair of VF-114 landing with gear that had apparently been damaged by anti-aircraft fire during a strike over Korea on August 16th 1950 and was not fully deployed.

0:15 Douglas AD-4 Skyraider of VA-115 loses its engine on landing after being damaged by flak during a mission over Korea on December 1st 1950. The pilot was Ens. Denzel Leland Crist and he survived first and second degree burns to his face. He served with distinction during the Korean War, winning the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart, he later became a commercial pilot (international captain) for TWA for 35 years, and retired to Muncie in 1988. He passed away in 2008.

1:39 F4U-4 of VF-113 goes over the edge on March 11th 1951, aided by the enormous torque of the Double Wasp engine. The pilot makes it out of the cockpit of his rapidly sinking aircraft and is rescued by a HO3S-1 helicopter.
