What about this one?
What if the people who survive the societal pivot-point are the ones that have been duly informed by their future selves (a la, the movie The Arrival). Their future selves come back to show them what they become, what their progeny become, and the consequences to the rest of the human race. However, they also show the survivors what can happen if the survivors decide to change history.
There is a big problem here, however. Many of these survivors, if history is changed, will no longer be survivors of the great cataclysm. But the reward for changing history is many-fold. For starters, many more human beings survive--if not nearly all of them--and the evolutionary path that their progeny will follow is much healthier and more beautiful. That is, more beautiful physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and more. The capacities that are derived from the changing of a potential history are wrought by the harbingers of the news, who themselves express those very differences as proof.
So, our evolutionary descendants of the great cataclysm are the grays, and our evolutionary descendants of changing history are angels. Mind you, the two options are not mutually exclusive, but what is exclusive is how many bloodlines survive. If history is turned on its head, and the angels are made to be born before the grays, then everyone can survive. Both histories are going to happen one way or another, for if they happen in one path, they happen in all. That is, one must think outside the confines of time and think of a timeline more as a choice stream. So, all possibilities are occurring simultaneously. The way they coalesce is merely dependent upon the way one lives in the present, which itself is defined by one’s history.
It can all change, and humanity will no longer be survived by the basest of people imaginable, but by people with healthier morals. It is a strange proposition to request from the most evil of people to do something that is completely against their nature, operate in a non-selfish manner, but at any point you can change. You simply need to commit to that change. This proposition is an odd one, and those human beings that represent the pinnacle of selfishness are not ones to change their minds, especially if it could potentially ensure the demise of their bloodlines.
So, a proposition is submitted back to you, a game. If their future selves can resist the cataclysm and call it out wherever it arises, if their future selves can defend their positions, then the survivors will allow the history to change. The resistance will cause evolution, and the evil ones may acquiesce. That is, the future will refuse to change, unless you rage at the dying of the light. Defend yourself. Resist. Prove your capabilities, and you collect believers.
