Slider Gets A Guest Room & A Safer Place To Live

Pup Missy found this Yellow Belly Slider in a parking lot, near a salty bay shoreline, off the Golf of America. We took it home for the night, then in the morning to a nearby, connecting water area with less road traffic. We looked for others but no others nearby.

It ate finely chopped and smashed carrots and romaine lettuce in water.

I read that they love an early breakfast, then spend the rest of the day basking in the sun. Like beach bums☺️

Diet consist of both vegs and animal. Young, less than 5 years should eat 2x a day, then less as they age, and eat mostly plant base as an adult. Pet stores sell supplements and pellet food to help keep pet turtles healthy.

Either indoors as a pet or out in the wild they need to have natural sunlight or equivalent bulbs, both air and water temps are best around 75-80°.

Males can grow to 9” & females 13”.
They live 30 to 40 years! Considering their size as they mature, they’ll need at least 100 gallon tank or a sufficient indoor or outdoor pond, sunbathing decks, and kept away from predators.

The constant upkeep of regular cleanings, and monitoring clean water and temps can be extremely daunting as they mature; people overlook the future work because they’re so darn cute when they are young, and sold at pet stores for just $20 to $100 for adults.

Sliders aren’t fond about being handled and can be aggressive and bite.

They’re native to southeastern US. I think many of the large, old turtles that we see in the wild were purchased as babies from pet stores, then released into the wild when they matured, because they became a lot of work for families. If your in the business of selling them, then I guess the work is worth the profit.

My dad had a couple of babies when I was a toddler; they were once very popular in pet shops. My father probably released them into the wild soon enough😁
