On April 11, 2021 Kimberly Ann Potter a Police Officer of the Brooklyn Center Police Department located in Brooklyn Center, MN engaged in a traffic stop of Daunte Wright, a 20 year old unarmed black male. The reason for his traffic stop was expired tags and a hanging air freshner. During the stop, police tried to forcefully remove Wright from his vehicle. In reponse to resistance, Officer Potter pulled her service gun and shot Wright point blank in the car. She instantly began screaming she shot him and stated she meant to grab her taser instead.

On April 12th Potter resigned from the police department and on April 13th Potter was officially charged.

On December 23, 2021 Potter was convicted by jury on 1st degree and 2nd degree manslaughter charges and sentenced to 2 years in prison.

On April 24, 2023 Potter was released from prison and is reported to have moved to Wisconsin following her release.

Wright's family reached a $3.25 million dollar settlement with the city of Brooklyn Center. Wright's passenger received a seperate $350,000 settlement with the city.
