The Quranic Story of the Children of Israel :The Covenant and Its Breach

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders, Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.

We welcome you to the Islamic informative series episode No 21 on healing and events from the Holly Quran, in this video we will describe, The Quranic Story of the Children of Israel :The Covenant and Its Breach

In the Qur'an, the story of the Children of Israel is often cited as a cautionary tale, illustrating the significance of obeying Allah’s commands and the dire consequences of repeatedly violating His covenant. Allah made a profound covenant with the Children of Israel, a promise that they would be blessed if they adhered to His guidance and commands. However, despite being chosen and receiving numerous favors, the Children of Israel continuously breached their covenant, and their actions led to punishment and divine displeasure. This story is a key theme in Surah Al-Baqarah, particularly verses 40–46, where Allah recounts the covenant with the Children of Israel, the favors He bestowed upon them, and their repeated violations of the promises they made.

In verse 40 of Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (SWT) begins by addressing the Children of Israel, reminding them of the great favor He had granted them: **“O Children of Israel, remember the favor which I have bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you over the worlds.”** This statement highlights the special status that the Children of Israel held among the nations at the time. They were chosen by Allah to receive His guidance through His prophets, and He provided them with blessings, including the Torah and the leadership of great prophets like Moses (Musa, AS). Allah's preference for the Children of Israel was not due to any inherent superiority but because of His mercy and His desire to guide them toward righteousness.

The covenant with the Children of Israel was established through the guidance given to them by the Prophets, especially Prophet Musa (AS). They were commanded to follow Allah’s laws, worship Him alone, and live righteous lives. The promise of Allah's support and blessings was contingent upon their obedience to His commands. However, despite these divine favors and clear instructions, the Children of Israel repeatedly turned away from their covenant with Allah.

In verse 41, Allah reminds them of another key part of their covenant: **“And fear the Day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, and no intercession will be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be helped.”** This verse underscores the importance of accountability on the Day of Judgment, a reminder that their actions would have consequences, and that on that Day, no one could intercede or save them except by Allah's will. Allah's message here is clear: their loyalty to His commands and their adherence to the covenant should not be based merely on temporary gains but should reflect a genuine commitment to righteousness, for the ultimate accountability would be before Allah alone.

Despite these repeated reminders, the Children of Israel continued to breach their covenant with Allah. They violated the laws He had set for them, disregarded the teachings of the prophets, and, in some cases, even disbelieved in the guidance they had received. Allah speaks directly to these violations, particularly focusing on their disobedience and ingratitude. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 42, Allah says: **“And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].”** This verse refers to the actions of some among the Children of Israel who, despite receiving the truth of Allah's message, deliberately mixed it with falsehood and concealed parts of the revelation. Their hypocrisy and dishonesty were significant breaches of the covenant they had made with Allah. Instead of upholding the truth, they manipulated it for their own benefit, leading others astray.

The breach of the covenant did not go unnoticed by Allah. As a result, Allah warns them of the dire consequences of their actions. The Children of Israel were blessed with abundant favors, yet they continued to disregard the guidance given to them. Allah had provided them with miracles, signs, and prophets to remind them of their duty to obey His commands, but time and time again, they failed to live up to the promises they had made. Their disobedience ultimately led to their downfall, as Allah’s wrath was directed toward those who continued to reject His guidance. In verse 43, Allah says, **“And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship].”** This command emphasizes the importance of maintaining the fundamental aspects of worship—prayer (salat) and charity (zakah)—which were integral parts of their covenant. By failing to uphold these basic obligations, they not only broke their agreement with Allah but also showed their lack of gratitude for the blessings He had given them.

The consequences of their violations became apparent throughout their history. Time and again, Allah sent them prophets to guide them back to the right path. Yet, many among the Children of Israel rejected these prophets, and some even went so far as to persecute and kill those sent to guide them. Despite their earlier promises and Allah’s repeated guidance, they strayed further from the truth. The Quran highlights this behavior in various places, indicating that this constant turning away from Allah’s commandments led to their eventual punishment.

In verse 44, Allah (SWT) says: **“Do you enjoin righteousness upon the people while you forget yourselves, though you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?”** This verse points to the hypocrisy that took root among the Children of Israel. They would call others to righteousness and to follow the laws of Allah, but they themselves neglected those very laws. This inconsistency between their words and actions revealed their insincerity and further compounded their violation of the covenant. They had become blind to their own shortcomings, failing to recognize that true righteousness required not just the teaching of others but also self-reflection and self-correction. Their disregard for their own spiritual well-being was a clear breach of the promises they had made to Allah.

In verse 45, Allah continues to remind them: **“And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is a difficult thing except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].”** This verse emphasizes the role of patience (sabr) and prayer (salat) in maintaining faith and fulfilling the obligations of the covenant. Allah makes it clear that the path of righteousness requires perseverance, and that it is not always easy. However, for those who submit to Allah in humility, following His guidance becomes a source of strength, enabling them to uphold their end of the covenant.

The failure of the Children of Israel to live up to their obligations resulted in divine consequences, which can be understood as a series of warnings and punishments that befell them throughout their history. They faced exile, oppression, and repeated subjugation as a consequence of their repeated violations. The punishments they faced were a reflection of their failure to uphold the covenant with Allah, their ingratitude, and their rebellion against His guidance.

In the concluding verse of this passage, verse 46, Allah (SWT) calls them to reflect on their actions and to return to righteousness: **“And when a book from Allah came to them confirming what was with them, although before they used to pray for victory over those who disbelieved, but when that which they recognized came to them, they disbelieved in it.”** This verse highlights how the Children of Israel, despite being aware of the signs and promises of Allah, rejected the final revelation that came to them, even though it confirmed what was already present in their scriptures. Their rejection of the new guidance from Allah—despite recognizing its truth—was another grave breach of the covenant.

In conclusion, the story of the covenant with the Children of Israel and their repeated breaches is a reminder of the importance of upholding Allah’s commands and remaining steadfast in faith. The Children of Israel were blessed with divine guidance, miracles, and prophets, but their continuous violations of the covenant resulted in their downfall. Allah’s repeated reminders and warnings were ignored, and as a consequence, they faced punishment and divine displeasure. Their story serves as a powerful lesson for all believers, urging them to honor their covenant with Allah, to follow His guidance, and to remain sincere in their worship and obedience. The ultimate message is clear: fulfilling the covenant with Allah is not just about following His commands but doing so with sincerity, humility, and a constant awareness of His presence and promises.

With this, we seek your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to follow the injunctions of the Quran and the Prophetic Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz.
