Cholera is spreading fast in Ethiopia’s Gambella region, killing at least 31 people and infecting over 1,500 over the past month according to NGO Doctors Beyond Borders. The crisis is worsening as refugees fleeing violence in South Sudan bring more cases into Ethiopia. In South Sudan’s Akobo County, 1,300 new cases have been reported in just four weeks.

With ongoing conflict, lack of clean water, and collapsing healthcare services, the outbreak is spiraling out of control. Doctors Without Borders is calling for urgent action, more healthcare support, access to safe water, and a cholera vaccination campaign.

The WHO has warned that cholera deaths jumped 71% last year, with Africa hit hardest. This preventable disease is now spreading due to conflict and lack of resources.
