as a seasoned mechanic I can add to your project by suggesting you buy a step bit instead of that paddle bit. it would make a cleaner hole and you can use high temperature RTV instead of JB Weld because it remains flexible and heat proof. Great project especially for a greenhouse.

also to add to this great comment: the "device" used to cut the pipe is called a pipe cutter and can be purchased at any hardware store. best way to cut copper pipe.

I would add, a "Paddle Bit" is also known as a Wood Bit, and is intended for such, though it can be used on thick plastics which are of similar hardness. They should not be used for metal.

Without a step bit you could probably prevent that large tear in the lid by placing the lid top down on a piece of sacrificial wood before drilling through it. A pilot hole or dent would help keep you centered and prevent slipping. Step bit still better though.

If you're unable to get a step bit and have to use paddle try some support. Flip the lid over and place on some scrap wood. If you have no scrap wood run the drill in reverse. Either way reduce the pressure and sharpen your bit, you can see his bit is more blunt than a German in Jamaica.

WRONG !!! There is NO difference between the paddle bit and spade bit because the paddle bit is just another name for a spade bit which is also known as a wood drill bit or wood-boring drill bit. The spade bit has a paddle (with multiple sharp points) at the bottom therefore it is also known as a paddle bit!

For anyone asking how to extinguish the flame. Use a glass, ceramic, or metal cup that is deep enough to encapsulate the wick and pipe and a diameter that would be less than the lid. Set it upside-down on the lid. The flame will go out in seconds. To keep it from evaporating or being flammable when you don't want it to be, you'll need some sort of lid that will seal around the jar lid.

Try sewing the felt to slide it in. The thread will burn away, so no problem. You can even just wrap the thread at the end to get it started. Hope that helps. Love your show.
