Antidepressants: the evidence base

In this episode of Psych Nurses Out Loud, David, Nicole, and Ashley discuss the evidence base supporting the use of antidepressants.

Given that about 25% of adults in America are on some sort of psychotropic prescription, this is a topic with widespread implications.

Instead of highlighting the growing mountain of evidence that these drugs often do more harm than good, the nurses give close scrutiny to the very evidence base most often used to support their use: UpToDate, a resource for doctors to guide their clinical practice, including when starting people on psych meds.

It’s not the role or responsibility of the nurses to convince you that any medication is “safe and effective.” Instead, researchers and regulators have a responsibility to demonstrate that they have done their due diligence in a robust and transparent way to assess a product’s safety and efficacy.
