Between 1977 and 1983, the Soviet Union built a hydroelectric power plant on the Euphrates River. As a result, the portion of the Euphrates River upstream of the dam turned into a lake.

Since 2021, the reservoir has begun to dry up, and after the water receded, the remains of the ancient city of Euphrates were discovered.
