Greenwich Village In New York Walking Tour
Filming Dates: Tuesday April 1st and Friday April 4th, 2025
Greenwich Village is a residential neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan in New York. Greenwich Village was known as an important landmark of the American bohemian culture in the early and mid 20th century. The neighborhood is known for its city life culture and artistic types of residents that made the neighborhood look beautiful. The West Village is a sub-neighborhood community that's a part of the larger Greenwich Village, bounded by the Hudson River to the west, 14th Street to the north, and both Sixth and Seventh Avenues connected.
Greenwich Village got its name from its Dutch origin Groenwijck (Green District). This community used to have a disease epidemic in 1822, called the Yellow Fever Epidemic with many residents in density affected from the spread. There was the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire on March 25th, 1911. There were 146 garment workers killed from the fire: 123 women and girls, 23 men. The cause of this fire started from one of the factory owners who lit a cigarette during his break. The cigarette got discarded when it ignited a pile of fabric scraps in a bin. The factory owners were Isaac Harris and Max Blanck who were indicted on charges of manslaughter and then were acquitted for their crime of the fire. Many of the women and girls who died from the factory fire were Italian and Jewish immigrants. Many others were Polish, Irish, German, and Central European. In today's world, The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Memorial is at the Brown Building of the New York University (NYU).
In the southwest corner, Macdougal, Thompson, and Sullivan streets form a trendy series of hangouts including such famous places as Café Wha?. That cafe is where musicians like Bob Dylan to Jimi Hendrix once played. Two famous parks in Greenwich Village are the Washington Square Park and Union Square. Greenwich Village has a different variety of places you would love to visit, such as two Japanese grocery stores (Dainobu, Yamadaya), bars, cafes, Italian restaurants, other fancy restaurants, art galleries, and Hudson River Park.
