Billionaire hedge fund manager and Trump ally Bill Ackman has issued a stark warning against the US president’s sweeping tariff strategy, cautioning it could trigger an “economic nuclear winter” and erode global confidence in America’s economy. In a strongly worded post on X, Ackman urged a 90-day pause in tariffs to avert deep financial damage, citing a $2 trillion market wipeout and the threat of collapsing business investment, consumer spending, and US credibility. Despite backing Trump in 2024, Ackman criticised the president’s aggressive approach of targeting allies and adversaries alike, warning that such blanket tariffs risk job losses, financial crisis, and long-term reputational harm. He called on the White House to reassess its course before irreversible damage is done, as Washington now considers a tariff pause—excluding China.
