The Monkey - This Movie is an Embarrassment

The Monkey (2025) is a disastrously bad attempt at horror-comedy that reeks of try-hard edginess and insufferable, self-aware dialogue. Os Perkins abandons everything that made Longlegs work in favor of brain-dead plotting, two-dimensional characters, and humor so forced it feels like a Rian Johnson or Taika Waititi reject. The story follows two brothers cursed by a murderous toy monkey, but any potential for an engaging horror film is buried under cringe-inducing quips, nonsensical character decisions, and a script that constantly undercuts its own tension. The film fumbles its premise at every turn, delivering an ending that’s as frustratingly stupid as the rest of the runtime. What could have been a clever satire or a solid horror thriller is instead an insufferable, poser attempt at genre filmmaking that makes it seem like Perkins either hates horror or its audience.
