Pinetown is a city within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, located just inland from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, approximately 16 km (10 mi) northwest of Durban’s city center. Named after Sir Benjamin Pine, a former governor of Natal, Pinetown was established in 1850 around the Wayside Hotel, a key stop along the wagon route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Situated at an elevation of 305 to 395 meters (1,000 to 1,300 feet) in the hills west of Durban, it historically served as a Victorian-era health resort due to its cooler, less humid climate compared to the coast.

Today, Pinetown is a significant suburban and industrial hub, known for its light industrial areas and as one of four key industrial zones in the Durban-Pinetown region. It features a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial zones, with suburbs like New Germany—home to German settlers and a nature reserve—and Cowies Hill, a residential area notable for its role in the Comrades Marathon route. The town’s economy includes factories producing goods like leather, concrete, and confectionery, alongside major distribution centers for companies such as Clicks and Pick n Pay. Its nickname, "motor town," reflects the concentration of car dealerships along Josiah Gumede Road (formerly Old Main Road).

Pinetown is well-connected by major freeways (N3, M13, M7, M19) and Metrorail commuter lines linking it to Durban and beyond. It hosts a campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Edgewood) and attractions like the Mariannhill Monastery, founded in 1882, and the New Germany Nature Reserve. With affordable housing, good schools, and shopping centers like Pine Crest, Pinetown attracts families and first-time buyers seeking a quieter alternative to Durban, just a 15-minute drive away. Its rich history includes a British concentration camp from the Second Boer War and a diverse cultural heritage influenced by German settlers and nearby apartheid-era freehold township Clermont.
