A California based company, Niagara Bottling get approval, despite local complaints
DNR: Elko New Market can pump more groundwater to supply bottled water plant
The DNR said it approved an amended permit allowing the city to
more than double its water use, from 135 million gallons to 365 million
gallons per year. Elko New Market requested the increase to provide
water to the Niagara plant, and to accommodate other growth in the
community.
Elko New Market draws its water from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan
aquifer, the source of drinking water for many in the Twin Cities metro
area. The DNR said its test results show the increase would not
negatively affect aquifer levels or nearby lakes, rivers and streams.

Residents complain of water problems after Elko New Market
pumping test Some residents who live near Elko New Market want answers after water from their private wells turned gray or yellow and contained
black sediment late last year.
The residents say the changes occurred around the same time the
city was conducting an aquifer test by pumping groundwater at higher-than-normal rates. Those who reported problems live in New Market or Eureka townships, outside of the Elko New Market city limits.
The aquifer test was conducted from Nov. 8 until Dec. 7. The DNR
received complaints from 22 well owners, most in April, said spokesperson Erik Evans in a email to MPR News June 12, 2024

Big bottled water plant in south metro gets city approval, still awaiting Minnesota permit
The Elko New Market City Council on Thursday agreed to give permits and more than $3 million in subsidies to a California bottled water company for a major plant in the small south metro city, despite concerns by some
residents that it would drain the aquifer and create more plastic pollution.
The project, which would hook up to the city's public water line and eventually draw 310 million gallons per year from the Prairie du Chien-Jordan aquifer, still needs a permit from the state Department of Natural
Resources (DNR). That process will likely take until the fall, city officials said.
Mayor Joe Julius said that "this amount of public discord" was new to the City Council.
