Getting into dream school is NOT the goal. You have it backwards

The biggest mistake (immigrant) parents make for their children is over-emphasis on sending them to college, as if that's the main goal in life.

But college should NEVER be the main goal. For my children, their goal is to live a fulfilling life. College is a tool with which they achieve it.

See your children's life as a forest. College is simply a tree within the forest.

Learn to see the forest, not the "Harvard" tree. Nor "Ivy League" trees.

Now, I'm all for parents allowing their children to dream big and apply for the Ivy League schools.

But almost all of the parents I talk to, their main goal for sending their children to these dream schools is not the intellectually rigorous education.

Their top 3 main reasons are: prestige, stable job, and social connections.

They focus on the materialistic outcome from the "higher learning."

That's why they think Harvard is so great.

If you're focused on helping your children achieve their life goals, you'd want them applying to Harvard for a personalized reason, such as:

"Harvard is a great school for John who's into artificial intelligence. Professor A at Harvard who teaches in this department is a pioneer in AGI and receiving his mentorship would help my son step closer to his dream of creating AI that will solve world problems."
