‘Mario Kart World’ – First New ‘Mario Kart’ In A Decade Is A Switch 2 Launch Game – Overview Trailer

Mario Kart 8 had a long shelf-life, originally releasing on Wii U in 2014, getting several rounds of DLC, then re-releasing on Nintendo Switch in 2017, and then getting another several rounds of more DLC before becoming the largest and most successful Mario Kart game ever. This week, Nintendo announced the sequel to Mario Kart 8: Mario Kart World.

Mario Kart World seems to be more of a free-roaming, open-world experience than past games in the series. Not only do you drive from race to race, there’s also a Free Roam mode for you to explore the different courses at your leisure. Knockout Tour is a marathon mode in which you have to place high at checkpoints or be disqualified. Your kart can balance on rails and power lines, and even wall-jump. Also, certain power-ups allow your characters to change costumes in the middle of the race.

Mario Kart World is a launch game for Nintendo Switch 2 and releases on June 5, 2025.
